Guitar, piano students earn awards at a competition

Students in guitar and piano classes competed at the Young Artists Festival sponsored by the Music Academy at the University of Texas at Brownsville on Saturday, May 2. Dr. Mary Grace Carroll (piano) and Ric Cortez (guitar) are their instructors.

Nixon seniors  Larissa Espinosa and Luis Bravo received trophies as the overall winners of the Junior and Senior divisions, respectively.  Nixon senior Jose Villa received medals for both piano and voice in the Senior Division.   Additional medals for piano duets were earned by Luis Bravo, Bravo Medina, Jay Jay Arriaga and Gerardo Hernandez.​ 
Students in guitar receiving awards were Jancarlo Galvan (freshman), Jose Luis Muñoz (senior), Jair Perez (sophomore), Matthew Heath (sophomore), Adrian Guevara (senior), Cesar Camarillo (senior), Albert Rodriguez (sophomore), Gilbert Rodriguez (sophomore).
 
In addition to medals earned for superior ratings, all students received a certificate of participation and a written critique.
