My family and I are always buzzing with mental energy. Never is the switch flipped off. We can be exhausted after a tough day but are still full of mental energy. My mother, brother, and I were once sitting on the couch on a Friday night. All of us were physically drained from the week. Regardless of our exhaustion, we were waiting to do something.

My mother addressed this and my brother talked to us about how he has to go play with the band every Friday at the football games. He didn’t have a game that Friday but his body still felt the exhaustion.  He was physically exhausted but was mentally restless. His legs were bouncing up and down proving his restlessness.

My mother agreed and she most certainly felt the same way. I was also restless ready to do a long list of things. My mother decided we should get in the car and take a long cruise. My brother and I loved the idea; restless for something to do. We got in the car, had a selection of music ready, and took a long cruise across town. It was then in the car that I thought about writing this column.

Every moment I’m thinking about the things I have to do. Some are how to get ahead and how to get better. I’m always making lists in my head. Be chores, goals I want to achieve, and what things I’d like to write about. Every single day, my mind is buzzing with plans, agendas, and ambitions yet it knows how physically exhausted I am.

It’s a strange cycle that never ends. I get my best ideas and make my best lists when I’m mentally wired. I see things without a clouded mind. The clarity helps me bring out my creativity. I think of what articles I’d like to write about, what blogs I’d like to write, pictures I’d like to take, and more. It’s quite convenient for my journalism class.

When I’m mentally wired I think of all the things I’d like to accomplish. It can be at 7:24 p.m. when I feel restless and want to study. I end up studying till 2:30 a.m. It can be during lunch when I think about all the getting ahead I’d like to do in my classes. It can be in bed when I lay awake thinking about ways to better myself. It can also be in the car on my way home thinking about all the chores I have to do at home or Sunday nights when I think about everything I have to get done during the week.

I don’t consider this mental energy a bad thing. Sure I’m always physically tired but it helps me stay ahead of the game. I’m always thinking of ways to prepare for the future. It helps me stay organized and in check. It even gives me bursts of creativity which I look forward to every single time. All these new ideas plus the mental energy makes for nice ambitions. This is what it’s like to be physically tired and mentally wired. Harvest your mental energy for all the good things in life.
